Water pumps for your Aquarium

For aquarists a water pump is a very useful accessory, whether you want to remove or add water to the aquarium or you want to mount a CO2 reactor, a chiller or an external heater a water pump is always helpful.

When you have problem with water distribution or poor distribution of fertilizers the best solution it is a water pump.
An aquarium with a poor water distribution can have a lot of problems and the worst is algae bloom.
There are several types of algae that occur when a plant that grows slowly is not visited by the currents with CO2 or algae that occur when a plant has a deficiency of a particular micro or macroelement which is caused by the weak water currents.

Water pumps are divided into two categories: Submersible pump (run underwater) and External pump or in-line pump (run out of the water).
With a submersible pump you can remove the water from the tank or connect to an internal CO2 reactor, while with an external water pump (in-line pump) you can choose any option.

• Submersible pump

submersible pumpSubmersible pumps are designed for salt and freshwater aquariums and in most cases a submersible pump is used for water recirculation.

The main advantage is that submersible pumps make little noise because run underwater. What I do not like about these submersible pumps is that heat up and this heat is transferred to water. The heat produced by the pump is directly proportional to the power consumption, on the market you find submersible pumps with power consumption of tens of watts.

When you are buying a submersible pump pay attention to these features: Minimum Aquarium volume, Maximum Aquarium volume, Flow rate, Hose connection and Dimensions.

• External pump (in-line pump)

in-line pumpIn-line pumps are powerful pumps that can be used in freshwater or salt aquariums for water recirculation. Because external pumps are so powerful a in-line pump is the best solution to insert in line with it some aquarium equipments such as CO2 reactor, external heater or chiller.
The main advantage of an external pump is that it is air cooled which means that the aquarium water it is not heated.

When you are buying a External pump (in-line pump) pay attention to these features: Power consumption, Flow rate, Delivery height, Hose connection inlet and outlet, Cable length and Dimensions.

I recommend using a water pump when you have too many accessories mounted in line with the external filter.
Rather than greatly reducing the water flow by connecting all accessories in line with the external filter you can choose a water pump and mount all accessories in line with that.
